UFC Heavyweight Junior Dos Santos is one week away from his chance of returning to UFC championship glory. Dos Santos, 33, was the UFC heavyweight champion for whopping 413 days. Scoring a stunning 64-second knockout over Cain Velasquez, defending the title vs Frank Mir, and ultimately losing the rematch to Cain. Now 2-1 in his last three fights since losing the title, Junior will get another shot at the gold versus a man who only Junior himself and Stefan Struve have been able to defeat, Cleveland’s Stipe Miocic [16-2 MMA 10-2 UFC].
During an interview with Combate, Dos Santos stated that he believes he will defeat Miocic again just like in 2014. Taking a page out of the McGregor-Mayweather playbook, Dos Santos has set his eyes on a crossover boxing superfight after he [claims to] regain the heavyweight gold, as he plans to call out the new heavyweight boxing champion everyone is talking about, Anthony Joshua, who is fresh off a TKO win over Wladimir Klitschko.
I would love to have a boxing match, Since I’m going to be the UFC heavyweight champion and there can be only one toughest man on the planet, I would like to fight Anthony Joshua. Champion against champion. It would be sensational.
Although he is clearly already making plans for after the Miocic rematch, Dos Santos claims to not be looking past Stipe and says he has been studying the first fight to help him better prepare:
It was such a tough fight, Stipe has heavy hands and great boxing. It was a hard fight for both of us and we learned a lot from each other. I think we have both improved and we will put on an even better fight. In the end, all that matters is who won. I was so happy with that win. I want the same result. I believe I will knock him out in the second round. I’m very confident. I’m a father now and I’m going through a great time in my life. It’s going to be incredible for the fans. I feel stronger, healthier and I feel like it’s my time. I’ve been working and I feel prepared. I respect Miocic and I will be in my best shape for this fight.
Junior dos Santos will square off with Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 211, on May 13, in Dallas, Texas.
