With Floyd Mayweather Jr. being retired ever since his 2015 victory over Andre Berto, combat sports fans all over the world have been left with a void in the boxing stardom space. Many have speculated who will be the next big superstar in boxing. The genetic freak powerhouse Deontay Wilder, The elusive footwork and speed of Vasyl Lomachenko, or perhaps Mexico’s king of catchweights Canelo Alvarez?
According to heavyweight legend Mike Tyson, we have our answer in heavyweight Anthony Joshua. Joshua all but made the world stop spinning when he knocked out Wladimir Klitschko in front of 90 thousand fans at Wembley recently, and Tyson says this fight changed boxing forever:
We have a new heavyweight champion that’s pretty exciting right now. If [Anthony Joshua] continues to be that way, sky’s the limit for him. That one fight [Joshua vs. Klitschko] changed boxing, and that’s what fighting needs. Floyd is making a lot of money and there’s a lot of little guys fighting, but what they wanna see is the heavyweight fight. The heavyweight that knows how to fight, and that’s what makes boxing big, the heavyweights make boxing big. The other guys can make some money but that’s not what makes the sport big.
