With Cinco de Mayo mere weeks away, there’s two things you can count on seeing everywhere, good food and good fights. The Mexican heritage holiday has taken on a whole new meaning in recent decades as one of the most coveted days of the year for boxing cards.
This year is no exception. On Cinco De Mayo (which means 5th of May for everyone who has never watched Dora) Middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will be squaring off with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a catchweight fight. This will be Canelo’s second consecutive year headlining a big cinco de mayo card, as he took on Amir Khan last year. But this year, he will be going toe-to-toe with a fellow Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – son of Mexico’s legendary champion Julio Cesar Chavez.
HBO’s recently released a half hour promotional video for the fight, that highlights the Mexico vs. Mexico Cinco de Mayo aspect of this match up. The mini documentary encompasses Mexican history as well as how boxing is rooted deep in Mexican culture, as well as the relevance of this fight and both fighters preparation for the impending slugfest.
